International Workshop

Systems Biology for Industry:

Dynamics and Regulation of the Metabolic

Balance in Escherichia coli

7th-8th October 2010, Jena, Germany

The Workshop will be the 8th in a series of annual International Workshops on Systems Biology held in Jena and organized by the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology - Hans Knöll Institute - and BioControl Jena GmbH.

In 2010, the Workshop will have its focus on the dynamic modelling of the overflow metabolism of Escherichia coli. Overflow metabolism limits not only biomass yield but also the quality of biotechnologically important products. The quantitative modelling of the regulation of metabolic fluxes around the pyruvate node, in particular with respect to the minimization of by-product formation, is a prerequisite for the optimization of recombinant protein production by E. coli.
The Workshop is held as part of the FORSYS Partner Project "Dynamics and Regulation of the Metabolic Balance in Escherichia coli" (www.forsys.hki-jena.de). Six partners collaborate within this project:
• Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg,
• University of Osnabrück,
• Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research GmbH Braunschweig,
• Friedrich Schiller University Jena,
• Hans Knöll Institute Jena and
• BioControl Jena GmbH.

The Workshop is intended to foster collaborations of dry-lab and wet-lab researchers in microbial systems biology. It will bring together partners from academia and from the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry.

Organization
The Workshop is organized by the Systems Biology / Bioinformatics Group of the
Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology - Hans Knöll Institute
(www.sysbio.hki-jena.de) together with BioControl Jena GmbH (www.biocontrol-jena.com).
It takes place within the framework of the German BMBF Systems Biology Initiative FORSYS
(FORschungseinheiten der SYStembiologie - Research Units for Systems Biology) and is supported by the Jena Centre for Bioinformatics JCB.

Date and Location
The Workshop will take place on 7th and 8th October 2010 (beginning 1.00 p.m.
and 9.00 a.m., respectively) at the Technologie- und Innovationspark TIP Jena, Beutenberg Campus, Wildenbruchstr. 15, 07745 Jena, Germany.

Fees
Participation in the Workshop is free for FORSYS and JCB members as well as speakers.
Others will have to pay a fee of EUR 125 (net plus 19 % German VAT).
Registration and Further Information: Registration deadline is 25th September 2010. To register for the Workshop, please download, fill in and sign the form available from www.biocontrol-jena.com and return it by fax to: ++49 (0) 3641 527832. There is a maximum of 50 participants.
